This is an OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until July 24, 2024. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be referred periodically every 15 days until the position is filled.
This is a Full-Time Surgical Technician position located in the Perioperative Patient Care Center at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY.
Duties
This position functions in an advanced capacity, the full-performance level GS-7 of a Surgical Technicians, which is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures.
The advanced Surgical Technician performs the following major duties:

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2024.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
Specialized experience for GS-06: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Preparing sterile fields for surgical procedures. Monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures. Handling medical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. Performing proper cleaning techniques. Handling and rotation of sterile supplies. Properly handling contaminated items and applying knowledge of universal precautions. Implementing infection control policies and procedures.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
Specialized Experience: Specialized Experience for GS-07: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing work as a surgical technician, operating room assistant, or surgical technologist performing scrub duties for all inpatient and outpatient surgical procedure; setting up for the surgical procedure; assembling equipment and supplies as well as monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout the procedure; coordinating or participating in the positioning and prepping of patients and obtaining supplies; specimen handling; and assisting the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin graphs, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples and cuffing sutures. Education for GS-07 - Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR,
Combining Experience and Education for GS-07 - Combination of specialized experience and education is acceptable. Education must be in excess of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
Preferred experience: Certified Surgical Technician Certificate and an Active Basic Cardiac Life support (BCLS) provider card American Heart Association
