Duties
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
Major Duties for Archeologist positions:
Provides general technical archeological assistance in a variety of areas related to or impacted by the archeological function, including National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 compliance, clearance, and planning and the NHPA Section 110 identification, evaluation, and management of historic properties.
Consults with recognized Indian Tribes under provisions of the NHPA, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) to discuss concerns, ensure compliance, and assess impacts.
Assists in the development of a variety of documents (e.g., cultural resource management plans, preservation guides, historic structures reports, determinations of eligibility, etc.) by gathering data from files and reports, conducting research, evaluating available information, preparing agreements/scopes of work/technical assistance requests as needed, and preparing/reviewing draft documents.
Participates in archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological sites, features, and artifacts.
Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.).
Duties for Natchez Trace Parkway include working across several states:
Serves on an Interdisciplinary Team to evaluate projects to determine effects on archeological resources in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Develops strategies to avoid, minimize, or mitigate avoid adverse effects. Lead archaeological surveys to discover historic and prehistoric sites; plan and carry out shovel testing and/or excavations to make determinations of historic significance.
Assesses conditions of archeological sites along the Parkway in TN, AL, and MS using set criteria.
Prepares and submits archeological state site number requests to the TN, AL, and MS State Historic Preservation Offices for review and approval.
Updates and maintains Natchez Trace Parkway archeological database.
Duties for Camp Nelson National Monument may also include:

Assess conditions of archeological and historical sites using set criteria; analyze or oversee analysis of artifacts and other materials.
Apply scientific methodology in planning and undertaking archaeological investigations; use computer database programs for tracking archeological information.
Write technical reports based on archeological findings; prepare extensive and detailed field notes documenting archeological findings.
Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/01/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following BASIC REQUIREMENTS for the GS0193 job series:
A. Successful completion a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND, Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND, Archeological field school. B. Successful completion related curriculum: a bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A (including archeological field school). (Copy of transcripts is required)
C. A combination of college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. (Copy of transcripts is required)
D. Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience must include:1) conducting archeological surveys, data recovery excavations and monitoring of projects; 2)planning and performing field inspections, research and testing, and project resource assessments; 3)reviewing cultural resource permits and fieldwork plans; 4)utilizing computerized systems for data analysis and drafting archeological reports on field investigations; and 5)preparing Determinations of eligibility and nominations for archaeological properties. You must include hours worked per week on your resume.

EDUCATION: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the position being filled. You must provide copies of your transcript.

COMBINATION: An equivalent combination of education and experience as listed above. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must provide copies of your transcript and the hours worked per week on your resume.
