Duties
Supervises pulmonary function and responsible for the administration of the pulmonary function testing and nasal CPAP equipment.
Schedules and administers specialized pulmonary function testing to ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients of all ages.
Provides training on laboratory pulmonary function, home oxygen, and non-invasive therapy techniques for assigned physicians, nurses, and other paramedical personnel.
Administers and monitors response to prescribed medication via inhalers or nebulizer during routine and special pulmonary function tests including assessment of bronchodilator responsiveness.
Performs pulmonary capillary bed studies, determines the partial pressures of gases, and administers various gases with analysis of expired gases.
Inserts esophageal balloons and performs static pulmonary compliance studies.
Assists physician performing fine needle aspirations, bronchial brushing and biopsy, and lung parenchymal biopsies using radiographic equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience One year equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal Service which includes experience in conducting pulmonary function tests, fittings of CPAP mask, perform test such as force and slow vital capacity, blood gas analysis, and flow volume loop, and operate and calibrate instruments such as blood gas analyzers, oximeters, and gas nebulizers.

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's Degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Instrument Technician, Respiratory Therapy, and Pulmonology.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
