The primary duties of this position involve operating telephone switchboard equipment to connect incoming and outgoing calls. The work involves routing the calls to their proper destinations and providing telephone and organizational information to callers.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Responsible for the operation of the medical center's switchboard.
Receives and places local and long distance calls.
Regularly handles a variety of difficult or highly complex calls requiring extensive personal involvement.
Provides telephone information including, but not limited to, telephone numbers, extensions, locations of individuals and organizations and directions.
Provides routing and alternate routing service for calls which must go through to assure rapid, reliable and effective dissemination of significant operational or other information.
Maintains constant surveillance over switchboard equipment, circuit capacity and utilization, nature and volume of calls being placed, in order to keep appropriate high level officials apprised of telephone events, trends or conditions which may have significant implications or potential influence on national command or area security.
Operates associated communication equipment installed as part of the switchboard such as mobile radio units, fire, night and other alarm systems, voice or overhead paging systems.
Maintains accurate listing of approximately 350 patients as well as key employees and other records incidental to the telephone, information, and receptionist services that are used regularly to give information by telephone and the routing of visitors.
Conducts scheduled and unplanned tests of emergency pagers as requested and maintains a spreadsheet of results.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify at the GS-04 level if you fulfill one of the following qualifications:
-General Experience: One (1) year of general experience - progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title; duties; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
-OR-
-Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
-OR-
-Combination: Equivalent combination of education and general experience (as described above) to meet the requirements at the GS-4 level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
-AND-
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English to meet the requirements of this position.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary in nature and will include long periods of sitting, standing and walking. Required to work shift with minimal amount of time away from switchboard especially if the lone Operator on duty. May be required to work rotating shifts with rotating days off. At times, the position may be required to work an evening shift and return the next day for regular hours shift. Typically, the employee may sit to do the work; however, there may be some light lifting required. Employee will be required to walk distances between buildings on the VAMC campus.
