You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION, RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. ***TEMPORARY PROMOTION NOT TO EXCEED 1 YEAR AND MAY BECOME PERMANENT without further competition***

Duties

You will conduct continuing radiation control surveillance of activities, personnel, and material in assigned areas within a nuclear vessel or shipyard. You will perform radiological evaluations of various worksites such as industrial work areas, areas aboard ships, and non-industrial work areas. You will verify adequacy of protective clothing and equipment planned for use by various personnel. You will participate in all phases of radiation-related emergencies and incidents under the guidance of the supervisor or a more experienced radiological control technician.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• You may be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

FOR THE GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience serving as a Radiological Control Technician protecting shipyard employees through prevention and control of nuclear incidents; Experience performing various phases of complicated radioactive systems projects; Experience assuring compliance with radiological safety requirements and recommending changes to improve the safety and efficiency of procedures; Experience monitoring work and testing procedures of all skill level trades; Experience evaluating various incidents and assume full control of activities, directing necessary emergency actions to contain radiation, minimize effects, determine causes, correct deficiencies, and identify mitigation practices. FOR THE GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience performing radiological evaluations and monitoring work procedures and worksites for proper containment, ventilations, tools, and detection devices; Experience working with the design and layout of Naval Nuclear Propulsion systems to assure radiological safety requirements are met; Experience performing surveys, correcting deficiencies, and mitigating radiological risks; Experience participating in all phases of radiological emergencies; Experience working with radiological principles, requirements, and procedures.
