Duties
Serve as statistical advisor and consultant on the procedures, concepts and methods of statistical analysis. Advises on potentials and limitations of pertinent statistical methods and techniques.
Analyze and evaluate proposed research projects with regard to experimental design and statistical analysis utilizing comprehensive knowledge of bio-statistical theory to adapt, combine, and develop statistical methodologies.
Analyzs and evaluate the statistical validity of research protocols for approval. Recommends policies and procedures for ensuring adequacy and appropriateness of the statistical approach used in research protocol.
Review and evaluate findings in manuscripts for statistical and scientific validity
Formulate specific experimental designs for use by others. Renders guidance in the final analysis and interpretation of findings
Develop and conduct formal instruction in biostatistics and computer-based statistical software. Evaluates available computer software for its adequacy and applicability to the research effort and selects packages to be acquired.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education AND experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Statistician:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing statistical analysis for methods of biomedical and social sciences research; developing and/or conducting formal instruction in biostatistics; utilizing computer-based statistical software for professional and technical support staff; and providing recommendations for improvements to meet program objectives. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Preferred: Ph.D. preferred in Statistics or Biostatistics.
