About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, at Fort Cavazos, Texas.

Duties
Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, monitor and manage the Army Medicine Secure Messaging System (AMSMS) at the clinic level, and record and relay incoming calls and messages to the staff.
Ensure eligibility for care, contact Patient Administration for verification and follow established office procedures for referring walk-in patients and patients with emergencies for treatment.
Measure and chart pediatric to geriatric patient height and weight and provide appropriate nutrition questionnaire and educational handouts to patients.
Gather information from patients, extract medical data from medical records as needed and document in patient chart, and schedule patient for group or individual counseling based on the specific state of the patient and direction from dietitian.
Observe patients for obvious signs of discomfort, illness, or stress, and notify appropriate professional staff of perceived emergencies or unusual circumstances, such as signs of abuse.
Compile data using automated systems, prepare releases of information for patients, use automated computer equipment and software systems to type a variety of material, and compose correspondence from written and verbal information.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- A pre-placement medical examination may be required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

Basic Requirement for Dietitian Assistant (Office Automation):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes receiving patients or visitors and conducting various clerical duties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
Proficiency requirement - Qualified Typist: In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements above, applicants for these positions must be able to type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, or by self-certifying their proficiency. Performance test results and certificates of proficiency are acceptable for 3 years.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
