This position is located within the Mental Health Nursing Service at the VA Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. The primary purpose of the work is to perform direct patient safety observation care and related administrative duties in support of the mission of the acute psychiatric unit and ED.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conducts routine psychological tests.
Conducts screening and intake assessments with patients who may be irritable, uncooperative, distressed, and/or suicidal.
Selects well-established diagnostic evaluation procedures.
Provides initial point of contact for patients who may be experiencing psychological emergencies.
Conducts walk-in/telephone screenings and intake assessments.
Gathers case history, complaints, or other problem-related information for use in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients.
The work involves utilizing a variety of routine approaches in the course of initial screening and evaluation of individuals experiencing emotional and/or psychological discomfort.
Has practical knowledge of psychodiagnostics testing.
Has the ability to evaluate and analyze routine psychological data, interview records, questionnaires, and any medical records to develop and generate reports.
Knowledgeable of management information databases to record relevant data for internal use and reports.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university with a major in an appropriate social or biological science, which included or was supplemented by 12 semester hours in psychology. Transcript is required at time of application to receive credit.
