The primary purpose of this position is to plan and construct custom containers and material handling items from wood or wood substitute materials; pack, preserve, and crate items for shipment and/or storage; and brace and block items for shipment.

Duties

Makes and repairs wooden supply, storage, and shipping containers such as boxes, crates, etc., which typically require complete custom building involving complex construction plans and work procedures. Secures freight such as heavy, unbalanced machinery, vehicles, and equipment; industrial plant equipment; artillery; odd-shaped containers; large explosive bombs, rockets, and missiles; nuclear materials (i.e., reactor materials); sensitive electronic equipment; large communication shelters; and similar cargo in a variety of containers and inside or upon conveyances such as ships, aircraft, vans, gondola cars, box cars, and barges. Performs a wide variety of standard and specialized preservation and/or packing work. Uses various protective cushioning and bracing techniques for custom packing of a variety of items including hazardous materials to ensure safe and damage free movement. Uses and maintains various types of hand and/or power tools, such as nail and staple guns; hand, radial, and circular saws; hammers, joiners, and squares; etc Performs duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures, and complying with established safety rules and regulations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4604 Woodworking Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
