This position functions as a Maintenance Mechanic Leader for the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS), Facilities Engineering Service (FES), Carpenter Shop responsible for leading employees (Carpenters, Painters, Masons, and Maintenance Mechanics) engaged in performing general maintenance and repair requirements duties as established by Leadership.

Duties

Serves as work leader of Carpentry Shop employees in accomplishing trades and labor work in support of the Facilities Management Division. The highest level of nonsupervisory work led is WG-10. Passes on instructions from the supervisor, getting work started through the assignment of work to individual group members and providing information on the proper way to perform tasks. Assists the supervisor with the preparation and ordering of materials to perform maintenance, repair and improvements to systems and structures throughout the medical center (ensuring that needed stock is obtained from supply locations for maintenance tasks). Performs basic troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems. Identifies electrical problems and works with associated shop members to plan material, equipment requirements and ancillary support operations required to complete identified repairs. Takes corrective action to repair electrical problems. Repairs light fixtures to include bulb, ballast, and diffuser replacement, and resets and troubleshoots circuit breakers. Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests and adjusts electrical generators, commercial feeder systems, security light sets, light fixtures, fans, heating systems, appliances, thermostats, electrical equipment used to chill/freeze/cool filter air. Test circuits and equipment using standard tools of the trade to include voltmeters, amp meters, watt meters, meggars, and ohmmeters. Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs conduit, inserting splices, and making connections to fixtures, outlets, receptacles, sub-feeder and feeder boxes and power sources. Maintains and services door closing devices and related hardware for buildings, furnishings, and equipment; performs interior and exterior finish carpentry, partitions, windows, doors, frames, building hardware, wall and door covering products, acoustical work, exterior architectural trim including roofs, gutters, and downspouts; installs manufactured items or equipment, metal casework, building specialty items and wood substitute articles. Measures and cuts materials to the required lengths and dimensions. Repairs/reworks locks and locking mechanisms such as monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors and other equipment in complete security or surveillance systems within the facility. Performs a variety of plumbing maintenance and repair work including work that involves removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe and tile, clogged pipe and fixtures, and leaky faucets and drains. Services various pumps, pumping systems, and motors for chilled water, cooling towers, high temperature water, and sewage ejection. Performs a variety of plumbing maintenance and repair work such as that which involves removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe and tile, clogged pipe and fixtures, and leaky faucets and drains. Hooks up to installed systems such devices as water heaters, disposal units, and faucets. Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment and systems that provide for heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering and circulating for different kinds of structures related to the medical center complex including those with areas that have special requirements such as patient rooms, surgery suites, laboratories, training rooms, and other areas with sensitive equipment. Performs general maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment throughout VASTLHCS. The position works as part of a multidisciplinary team of maintenance personnel and a wide variety of work outside of any one particular trade are required of the position. Performs walkthrough inspections of buildings and initiates electronic work orders for deficiencies. Conducts maintenance and repair with regard to the associated work orders and closes out electronic work orders upon completion of the work. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required. Climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions is necessary. Using a hammer and other hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 50pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or others assist in movement. Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather, works in mud, and in wet or icy areas. Exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Typically inspects parts, equipment, and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time.
