Duties

Conducts natural resource management activities in both front country and backcountry areas related to one or more of the physical sciences. Incumbent will install, operate, and maintain complex sampling, and laboratory equipment and instruments. Inventories equipment, evaluates quality assurance compliance, and calibrates equipment as necessary. Incumbent must be able to carry loads up to 40 lbs over rough country in extreme weather as well as operate non-motorized watercraft (such as a canoe or raft) in a large desert river. The incumbent of this position organizes, schedules, and conducts various technical duties in such fields as water quality, air quality, chemistry, geology, geophysics, hydrology, physics, and other physical sciences. Primary duties include safely: operating and maintaining air quality monitoring equipment, operating and maintaining water quality monitoring and sampling equipment, collecting and organizing field data using standardized data collecting procedures and equipment, using GIS technology to draft professional quality maps, collecting geospatial data with a GPS and surveying equipment (such as total stations), downloading and manipulating geospatial data, data gathering to document project phases and results; and writing a project report. Provides guidance to volunteers and other technicians. Incumbent collects qualitative and quantitative data to monitor geomorphic condition of the Rio Grande. Incumbent collects qualitative and quantitative data to monitor sediment and flow dynamics in Chihuahuan Desert rivers and streams. Incumbent participates in a variety of projects related to landscape restoration and its impacts on erosion, sediment dynamics, and channel morphology. Incumbent operates manual transmission vehicles, watercraft, backpack sprayers, pulling/backing trailers, portable pumps, brush cutters, tillers, chainsaws, and hand tools. Incumbent will also assist in operation of the park's air quality program. Duties will include operation and maintenance of multiple instruments for a variety of national air quality monitoring programs. The incumbent will also assist in scheduled verification and calibration of instruments. Data management responsibilities include maintaining detailed field notes, completing field data sheets, using computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, operating global positioning system (GPS) equipment, and entering data into databases and/or park geographic information systems (GIS) using ESRI ArcGIS software. Incumbent delivers written and verbal progress and task completion reports. Area Info: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families living in 4 housing areas; Panther Junction (PJ), Chisos Basin, Castalon, and Rio Grande Village. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge. Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away from PJ) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities, including supermarkets, variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles). Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/26/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, engineering, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited if the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. Experience in another series (e.g. Biological Science Technician 0404-6) may be credited if the scope and duties of the position included substantial interdisciplinary work in the physical sciences. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in physical science, such as geology, geoscience, geophysics, earth science, environmental science, hydrology or other directly related fields. This education has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of directly related education and GS-06 or equivalent specialized experience described above which would qualify me for this position. For example, I have 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with 6 months (9 semester hours) of graduate education, as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), directly related to this position.
