About the position: This position will be assigned to the SLD 30/30 FSS/Community Services Flight Outdoor Recreation. Must be able to lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Duties

Plans and carries out gardening work according to the schedule or project assignment, keeping within the framework of established gardening practices. Determines quantities of plants, seeds, fertilizer and other materials needed for specific areas. Landscapes assigned areas and determines need for spreading topsoil, fertilizing, liming, seeding, planting and watering. Determines when and how to plant/transplant flowers, shrubs, grass and trees based on seasonal schedules or project plans for the ODR facilities, suitability of the weather, degree of moisture in the soil and stage of plant growth. Performs grounds maintenance work such as mowing, weeding, watering, pruning and trimming, selecting and applying established gardening methods. Mows and trims grass evenly; weeds flowerbeds; waters lawn and nursery; and prunes/trims shrubs and trees to obtain the shape, size and growth required. Makes proper cuts using pruning shears, saws, and other tools; seals tree wounds with coating mixtures in order to protect and minimize damage. Washes, cleans, oils, sharpens, lubricates and performs minor maintenance on equipment. Uses and maintains a variety of hand and power operated garden tools and equipment such as seeders, spreaders, edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayers, spades, hoes, rakes and mowers. Operates boom slope mowers to cut grass on slopes while operating the tractor on level ground along roads. Operates tractors and equipment between shrubs and trees; along fences and curbs; in snowy or marshy areas; and in areas where tree limbs, bushes and rocks are more likely to cause clogging or jamming of the equipment. Operates a farm-type tractor and towed or attached equipment on level or rolling terrain typical of ODR facilities. Frequently operates towed or attached equipment (e.g., mowers, aerators, plow spreaders, harrows, sprayers) manipulating both tractor and equipment controls at the same time through hydraulic or mechanical controls. Determines equipment operations for maneuvering over level or rolling terrain that are appropriate to the operating characteristics of the tractor and towed or attached equipment. Operates a variety of gasoline, diesel or electric powered-wheeled vehicles, such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks or dump trucks that typically have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 10,000 and up to 26,000 pounds. The supervisor assigns projects to be accomplished, areas to be worked and the seasonal planting and maintenance schedule which has been planned for the assigned area. Qualifying Experience: Must have experience which demonstrates knowledge of seasonal gardening tasks, such as; fertilizing, preparing seedbeds, transplanting, laying sod, aerating, pruning, trimming, and applying chemicals to plants; grounds maintenance; skill in operating a variety of tractors and in operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of more than 10,000 and up to 26,000 pounds. Must be able to follow written and/or oral instructions, work orders, and specifications related to gardening, motor vehicle and tractor operation, and to perform preventive maintenance. Must be able to reach, bend, turn or move hands, arms, feet, and legs. Must be able to lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. Must satisfactorily complete a Tier 1 background investigation. Must possess a valid driver's license. This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. Position is a position of trust. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.
