About the Position: Serves as the engineer assigned to one of the derrickboats stationed on the St Marys River, engaged in navigation and hydropower maintenance.
Duties
Computes ballast water levels to ensure derrickboat stability is maintained based on crane lifts, excavator operational conditions, etc. and considering vessel fuel levels, ancillary deck equipment and material weights, etc.
Troubleshoots machine problems in accordance with sound marine mechanical practices.
Maintains a written and computerized log of all maintenance, maximizing Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM) use in coordination with Facility Operations Specialist.
Responsible for round-the-clock watches, when scheduled, to assure efficient, continuous operation of the plant.
Performs major overhauls as prescribed by the equipment manufacturer or as the operating condition of the equipment warrants.
Always adhering to manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications in maintaining and repairing equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and may require an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
- TDY may be required up to 75% or more of the incumbent's time.
- The incumbent shall maintain annual rigging and applicable operator certifications.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) DERRICKBOAT ENGINEER without more than normal supervision. - I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex duties independently as a Derrickboat Engineer in operating, maintaining, and making repairs to machinery and equipment such as large high-speed diesel engines generators and switchgear. I have extensive experience in performing repairs, operating, and maintaining AC and DC power systems, computer control boards, compressed air systems, hydraulic systems, fuel oil transfer and fuel oil service systems. I have extensive knowledge in hydraulic and mechanical equipment that supports lifting operations. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

The incumbent stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs steps and ladders, and frequently performs lifting of up to 50 pounds.
The incumbent is subject to dangers inherent to floating plant operations such as, but not limited to, drowning, capsizing, falling, and being struck by loads. The majority of work is performed in confined areas subject to exhaust, flames, fuel oil, and cramped positions. Due to extremely high noise levels, the incumbent wears hearing protection. The incumbent works around moving machinery where there is a danger of sustaining cuts and bruises. The incumbent works in confined and cramped conditions and spaces and is subject to dangers associated with welding, flame cutting and general structural/mechanical maintenance and repairs. The incumbent works indoors and outdoors, subject to all types of weather, including harsh winter weather conditions on the Great Lakes and St Marys River.
