The position is located within the Transportation Unit of Engineering Service at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Operates 22 to 44-passenger bus (with or without wheelchair lifts), passenger cars, station wagons, pickup trucks, 7 to 15-passenger vans, cargo vans and other trucks (with or without lift gates or other special equipment) with automatic or standard transmissions. Follows the pre-determined route, stopping at all established stops to pick up/ drop-off passengers, adhering as closely as possible to the set timeframes. When necessary, driver will assist passengers on and/or off bus. Delivers/picks up motor vehicles to/from area garages, Department of the Navy or GSA Motor Pool for repairs and servicing, as directed. Performs minor maintenance and/or adjustments and conducts both pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle. Report mechanical deficiencies to the Transportation Unit Leader, Foreman or Dispatcher for correction as soon as noted deficiency comes to the driver's attention. Correctly completes and submits travel documents (trip tickets/logs, etc.). Services and cleans vehicles when required. Performs housekeeping duties in the Transportation Unit areas. May be assigned to perform the duties of the Dispatch Clerk, i.e., receiving, requests for transportation service, dispatching drivers, etc. May be selected to represent the Transportation Unit as a member of various committees. Performs other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Must have muscular and visual coordination, rapid reflexes, depth and field of vision must be within normal limits. Good hearing, corrected with an aid, is also required to enable incumbent to perform a satisfactory job. Moderate to heavy physical capacity may be required when operating the buses/trucks using in transporting the patients/cargo due to the size, wind resistance, turning radius, braking distance, and other factors not readily visible while driving lighter and smaller type vehicles. Assists in the loading/unloading of materials and/or other cargo being transported (lifts cargo weighing 0-50 pounds without assistance; over 50 pounds with assistance). Work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. Emergency repair work may expose the operator to all types of climatic conditions, as well as to the hazards of traffic. Driving will mainly be on well maintained roadways; however, roadway conditions may be severely deteriorated due to construction work or weather conditions. Some off the road driving may be required. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
