The position is located in Red Lake, MN, Indian Health Service Unit, Sterile Processing Department. The position supports direct patient care by ensuring proper reprocessing, maintenance, and storage or critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME) throughout the service unit in compliance with national and local policy and procedures. The employee will be responsible for meeting established Sterile Processing, Dental and Nursing Service standards and policies.

Duties

Performs Central Supply duties involving the care, decontamination, preparing, packaging, sterilizing storing, ordering and distributing patient care supplies and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) for all direct patient care services for the RLSU. Responsible for all sterilization functions including record keeping. Maintains an inventory of supplies; orders and stocks as needed to all direct patient care units of the RLSU. Orders stock as needed through established guidelines and procedures. Makes routine rounds to direct patient care units to collect items for reprocessing and to deliver clean items.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Experience Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. or Education and Training: For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position. Successful completion of training provided through schools, hospitals, the military, or employee development programs of at least 20 classroom hours per week may be substituted for specialized experience on a week-for-week basis. Such training must have provided the knowledge and skills required to perform the work of the position, such as those described under specialized experience above. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level Examples include: processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment; operation of washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and steam sterilizers; practice proper storage procedures; use aseptic techniques. and/or 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. Examples include: Understanding basic medical/surgical terminology; proficient in the selection, use, testing and adjustment of various washers, sterilizers and other equipment; advising medical personnel on the proper use of equipment; Decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, storage, ordering, distribution of patient care supplies. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
