What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?
This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year that may be extended for 1 additional year without further competition.
Salary: $90,662 (Step 01) to $117,856 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
The selectee will be entitled to a cost of living allowance of 3.15% in addition to the basic salary.
Duties
As a Biologist within the Pacific Island Ecosystem Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
This position is to provide technical support, information transfer, and scientific outreach at PIERC.
Serves as a senior advisor to the Center Director and the management team for technical support and strategic planning for ecologic challenges and research.
Provides information transfer both within the science center and to other entities outside of the center. Works with both senior and early-career scientists to understand resource management issues and develop research to address those issues. Communicates on both information needs and research findings with senior management official/authorities.
Mastery of the concepts, principles, and practices of ecological and biological research needed to serve as a technical authority in the development of policies, standards, and procedures that lead to improved management techniques, methods, and technology development, and other scientific activities in support of natural resource management agencies.
Broad knowledge of hydrology and geology needed to engage with a wide range of research partners in the development of watershed and other interdisciplinary science projects, and to work with stakeholders on development and implementation of those projects.
Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.
Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
