Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately March to Nov, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Government housing maybe available. Major Duties StatementThis position is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Maintenance Division, Plateau District,Vinton Sub-district. This position assists journey-level, or other higher graded maintenance workers under general supervision in general landscaping and grounds maintenance, basic carpentry, simple electrical installations or repairs, basic plumbing work, and painting interior and exterior surfaces, and perform a variety of janitorial services. Removes trash and debris from roadway and road sites. Operates farm type tractors and associated attachments used to mow maintained roadside landscape areas. Operates trucks up to 1-ton to pick up supplies, transport materials to and from work site, picking up materials from local vendors, or plowing snow as needed. Area/Duty Station InformationThe Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia between two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. Vinton, Virginia - The duty station is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Vinton Maintenance Area, which is located near Roanoke, Virginia. Career Seasonal Positions: These are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Blue Ridge Parkway is March through October, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability to interpret instruction, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Use of Measuring Instruments If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
