Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: As a Supervisory Microbiologist, you serve as the Chief of Laboratory Research Branch with overall responsibility for administrative functions of the branch and supervise a multidisciplinary, laboratory-based, scientific research program in leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases. Your major duties and responsibilities include: Serving as an expert resource for knowledge about leprosy research. Supervising the planning, designing, and conducting of research on mycobacterial diseases, specifically on the immunological and molecular biological aspects of leprosy. Preparing grant proposals for soliciting intramural and extramural funds to carry out research on leprosy. Teaching on research topics in leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases at local medical universities as requested. OPM Individual Occupational Requirements for Microbiology Series, GS-0403 Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that INCLUDED at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: In order to meet minimum qualification requirements, applicants must demonstrate possession of the following selective placement factor for this position as stated below: Professional scientific knowledge, training, and experience with leprosy research. In addition to meeting the above requirements, in order to qualify for this position at the GS-14 level, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of minimum qualifying specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-13 level in the federal service. MINIMUM QUALIFYING SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, an applicant's one full year of specialized experience must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance. Examples of minimum qualifying specialized experience equal to the GS-13 level in the federal service include performing the following types of tasks on a regular and recurring basis: Managing a microbiological scientific laboratory research program focused on leprosy. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
