The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is in the National Air and Space Museum Collections Processing Unit (CPU) which is responsible for properly protecting the National Collections of Aeronautics and Space Artifacts in perpetuity, guaranteeing intellectual as well as physical control over those collections. Duties

The Supervisory Museum Specialist assists the Chief of CPU in collections care and personnel management of the unit. He/She reports to and works under the general supervision of the Chief of CPU serving both as a skilled member of the unit and as a supervisor of a team of museum technicians/specialists in the handling, storage, shipping, maintenance, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts from the National Collections. The CPU also maintains records of artifacts by regular entry of information in the computerized collections information databases. Teams are comprised of museum technicians/specialists of varying grades and may include contracted support. This position also provides direction to interns, and volunteers who support the unit.

Qualifications

GS-12 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Experience supervising staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors in a museum environment. Experience in a museum setting handling aeronautical and space artifacts such as: aircraft, aircraft engines, satellites, spacecraft.  Handling aerospace artifacts which includes: moving and storing of aforementioned types of artifacts by utilizing equipment such as forklifts, gantries, pallet jacks, dollies, and vehicles; disassembling, assembling, loading, unloading, securing, cradling, or creating mounts for artifacts. Experience packing and crating artifacts for transportation, considering their fragility, size, and material composition while selecting appropriate packing materials, such as acid-free tissue paper, foam, or padding, and using proper techniques to create protective enclosures or crates Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education

Education cannot be substituted as experience for this position at the GS-12 grade level.
