This position is located in Grand Canyon National Park, in the Resource Management Division.

Duties

The wildlife biologist serves as the project manager for the Grand Canyon bison reduction project. In cooperation with appropriate staff, researchers, and partners, the wildlife biologist designs, develops, tests, and implements protocols to identify, evaluate, and do long-term monitoring of the bison reduction project. The wildlife biologist coordinates the park's bison management strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies. The wildlife biologist resolves most problems that arise and coordinates the work both within the work unit and with other park divisions. Independent judgement is required on a regular basis in developing, testing, and refining bison reduction procedures and methods, and in the application of these methods in the field. The wildlife biologist develops and carries out statistically valid data collection protocols for the monitoring of bison populations and the results of bison reduction, including mitigation and resource restoration programs. Organizes, schedules, and executes the Parks Threatened and Endangered species monitoring projects (Mexican Spotted Owl, California Condor, Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Ridgways Rail) by selecting site locations, sampling techniques, appropriate equipment, logistics, etc. Manages seasonal staff, interns, and VIPs working on the above-mentioned projects. Assists the Wildlife Program Manager in the preparation of the Wildlife sections of planning documents as assigned. Provides written comments on environmental assessments, resource management plan reviews, and park planning documents. The wildlife biologist carries out quality control checks on data collection and entry performed by others, conducts analysis of complex data to determine the significance of findings, and reports those findings to park management and other agencies.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/29/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position has basic requirements required by the Office of Personnel Management. Applicants must meet one of the following before the close of the announcement: EDUCATION: Successfully completed a biological science degree that included: at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology. AND At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects. (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.) AND At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. -OR- Combination of education and experience that includes courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, which has equipped me with the knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: assisting in the planning and implementation of wildlife censuses and monitoring surveys; working as a field crew leader for a wildlife project or study where field decisions were made independently, and activities included gathering, recording, and analyzing resource information, and preparing summary field reports for inclusion in a final report; or working in a professional or academic position that included working on portions of a research project to include choosing methodology and implementation of data gathering, analysis of wildlife data, and preparation of portions of a final report. You must provide hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of three years of progressively higher level of graduate education (54 semester hours) leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree. (Coursework directly related to position being filled). You must provide transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience. For example: I have an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). You must provide transcripts and hours worked per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
