This position is located within the Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) at the VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine performing technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). In addition to performing all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic, you will serve as a Supervisory Paramedic that exercises supervisory authorities and responsibilities over the Ambulance Services Program (ASP).

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Oversees all aspects of the Ambulance Services Program (ASP); Creates, adjusts, and approves, ASP employee schedules as well as reviewing and approving leave requests; Prepares forecasts of funds needed for equipment, materials, and supplies; Interviews candidates for positions and recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignment; Provides informal feedback and performance evaluations; Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses; Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment and/or procedures; Performs patient triage and records patient's vital signs; Administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards; Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment; Operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems; Assists in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Full time, Rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays Supervisory Paramedics may work rotating shifts, including holidays, and are subject to occasional recall to maintain adequate coverage of the Emergency Department and ambulance service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mandatory overtime may be required due to run times that may extend beyond normal scheduled work hours. To qualify for this position, all applicants must meet the following: English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ Selective Placement Factors: This position includes Selective Placement Factors (skill, knowledge, ability, or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. NOTE: Certifications must be submitted with your application to receive credit for further consideration. 1. Possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS) certification 2. Possess and maintain a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification 3. Possess a valid/current state issued certification for eligibility for employment as a Paramedic 4. Possess a current and valid state issued driver's license (We cannot accept photographs, therefore, please DO NOT submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is conducted, you will be required to provide a copy of your current and valid state-issued driver's license at that time.) Note: As a condition of employment Paramedics shall obtain certification as a National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) no later than 18 months after employment as a condition of continued employment with the Veterans Affairs. In addition to the English language proficiency and selective placement factors you must also meet the one of the following: Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) in the Federal Service, that is directly related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Supervisory Medical Care Transportation Technician - Supervisory Paramedic. Specialized experience includes serving as a lead/supervisor and technical advisor pertaining to emergency medical services; responding to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness; supervising and/or administering life-sustaining aid to patients; performing patient triage and employing a variety of advanced emergency medicine procedures during transport; assisting with planning the work of other paramedics and subordinate staff members; observing workers' performance and providing feedback/guidance. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position. Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education Substitution: Successful completion of a Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree and is directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Physical Requirements: This position involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. May be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective closing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises. Employee may be exposed to infection and contagious diseases, and may involve exposure to patients who are intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, or mentally unstable resulting in belligerent and sometimes violent behavior.
