This position serves as a Research Assistant to the Indianapolis VA Center of Excellence (COE) Research and Development program.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 4 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4-year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Major duties and responsibilities include: Works with a Research faculty member (principal investigator) in managing assigned operations of a research project. Screens patients for eligibility for enrollment in a clinical trial. Interviews patients for interest and participation in the trail, solicits signed informed consent and provides self-administered surveys to patients enrolled. Maintains files on reasons patients are ineligible for the study, patient consent forms, consensus of current patients and enrollment rates in a secure and confidential environment. Performs data collection, entry, and verification. Maintains accurate files, databases, and documentation related to the research project. Updates research team on any discrepancies found in data collected. Assists the principal investigator in assembling all necessary reports required for the research project. Works with statistical coordinating center personnel to ensure study protocols are being followed and policies are being adhered to. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify at the GS-7 level if you fulfill one of the following qualifications: -SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: screening for eligibility for enrollment in a clinical trial; maintaining files on participant eligibility/ineligibility, patient consent forms, enrollment rates, etc. in a secure and confidential environment; performing data collecting, entry, and verification; assisting in assembling reports for a research project. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Computer SkillsInterpersonal SkillsResearchSelf ManagementStandards IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. There may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items such as some light equipment, Xerox paper and books. At times during the year, there may be occasions of more physically strenuous duties which may include assistance in the moving and relocation of equipment, furniture or other basic office equipment and devices. Must be capable of carrying, moving, and/or transporting heavier boxes and multiple copies of grant proposals to postal offices and agencies several times per year. Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time. Must have manual dexterity to operate a keyboard and pointing device. Must be able to concentrate for extended periods of time.
