THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D1194000 and is part of the IL FMS 7, National Guard.

Duties

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (TITLE 32), WG-5801-5/8/10, you will perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Perform work in accordance with modification work orders, technical manuals, lubrication orders, maintenance bulletins, regulations or management policies. Determine what adjustments may be necessary to complete work orders, and whether any additional repairs other than those specified or indicated on the work order are necessary. Assist in the maintenance of production reports and records. Perform operational inspections and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, cleaning, etc., and performs other preventive maintenance operations as required. Utilize engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools. Utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers. Identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards. Diagnoses the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment. Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment that may include self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, power shovels, compressors, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, sedans, buses, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, semi-trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment. Repair a variety of more complex major systems to include engines, cross drive or similar multi-system transmissions and a variety of intricate fuel injection systems. Make repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, and brake cylinders. Remove and disassemble engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Reassemble engines and other systems, and adjusts, tests, and reinstalls in vehicles and equipment. Perform fuel injection equipment repair, overhaul, rebuild, and calibration duties. Maintain and repair by removing and replacing components and elements including items such as radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms. Recover and evacuate inoperable vehicles from the unit location of breakdown. Remove, clean, reinstall, or replace defective parts of components and systems such as injectors, leaking wheel cylinders, corroded mufflers, fuel tanks, brake cylinders and worn brake shoes, voltage regulators, generators, injector pumps, and fuel pumps.

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code 709), will be in the following manner and sequence, The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG. The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees. The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible. The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership. The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens. Military Grades: Enlisted/Warrant Officer - Minimum Rank E1 - Maximum Rank CW2 GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and to use common tools and equipment in the line of work. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level MUST possess experience or training diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and more complicated systems; experience which has provided a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment; experience applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems; experience in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems. WG-08 Level MUST possess experience or training using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs; experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories; experience which demonstrates a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments; experience demonstrating an understanding of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships; experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics. WG-05 Level MUST possess experience or training using common hand tools in making repetitive repairs under close supervision; experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the simpler and routine duties of the trade. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
