This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service, Corn, Soybean and Wheat Quality Research Unit in Wooster, OH. In this position, you will serve on a team conducting research to improve corn and soybean virus disease management. You will characterize virus transmission through seed and evaluate strategies to reduce the impact of virus diseases. This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.

Duties

Adapt, modify, or develop new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project. Contribute to the planning of various steps in experiment or project and to interpretation and documentation of findings. Initiate action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results or recommends resolution to supervisor. Perform routine and recurring techniques with equipment and automated system as needed for testing and evaluating materials. Grow plants from seed or transplants; plant and pathogen sample collection; and process plant or seed samples for research.

GS-06 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is assisting with an experiment or research project related to plants or plant pathogen research; keeping detailed records of experimental data; and performing routine and recurring techniques using a variety of specialized equipment. OR Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related courses include plant science, plant biology, plant genetics, horticulture, plant pathology, molecular biology, and biology with emphasis on plants or plant pathogens. OR A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. GS-07 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is participating in an experiment or research project related to plants or plant pathogen research; statistically analyzing or summarizing data; and maintaining, modifying, or calibrating laboratory equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures. OR Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related courses include plant science, plant biology, plant genetics, horticulture, plant pathology, molecular biology, and biology with emphasis on plants or plant pathogens. OR A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
