As acting department head at the National Gallery, the primary purpose of this role is to advance the institution's mission, vision, and strategic priorities, emphasizing the promotion of sustainable 21st-century practices and national service. Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1015-15. Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-14 level, responsible for the Gallery’s care, study, display, and expansion of a world-class collection of over 1,500 paintings, sculpture, and works in other media (excluding prints, drawings, and photographs), primarily American and European, from 1900 to the present day, including works in the National Gallery’s Sculpture Garden.

1. Mastery knowledge and seasoned curator and manager with a record of achievement in art museum management, art acquisitions, collection care and development, research, publications, exhibitions, interpretation, and programs.
2. Proven track record of initiating and managing complex projects and exhibitions that entail cross-institutional collaboration.
3. Experience working closely with curators, conservators, registrars, and collection managers in managing changing art storage needs for expanding collections.
4. Possess excellent communication, writing, public speaking, and highly attuned interpersonal skills; must be energized about working collaboratively with other curators and diverse museum professionals.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Requires reading knowledge of one of the following: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or an Eastern European language.

Education
GS-1015: Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.
