Qualifications
NOTE: You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement.
In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:
To qualify for the Research GS-11 level, you must have one of the following:
1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level defined as assisting laboratory research involving freshwater ecosystems; analyzing experimental endpoints; and preparing scientific reports;
master’s or equivalent graduate degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position;
equivalent combination of education and experience.
To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you must have one of the following:
1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting laboratory research involving freshwater ecosystems; analyzing research data; coordinating the operation of a research laboratory (i.e. responsibility for equipment, supplies, reagents, experimental samples, safety measures and quality assurance); and preparing scientific reports;
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position;
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of laboratory research principles, practices and procedures in the analysis of ecological samples.
Ability to plan and implement research experiments.
Ability to apply the latest developments in the analysis of ecological samples to resolve problems.
Skill in written communication to prepare reports with findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Skill in oral communication.
Ability to train and mentor lower graded scientists in the scientific process.
Knowledge of quality assurance procedures sufficient to perform quality assurance checks and validate methods.
Skill in contract management.

Education
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in:
Biology: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
Ecology: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
Chemistry: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described coursework.
