Robert J Dole VA Medical Center is hiring a Hospitalist (Staff Physician) to serve Veteran patients of the facility. The Hospitalist responsibilities include: establishing, maintaining, and evaluating the quality of health professions training and providing care in various settings to include outpatient clinics, inpatient units: i.e. Intensive Care, Med/Surg, and in the Emergency Department. Staff within the Hospitalist Service area are ultimately responsible for all aspects of medical care.

Staff within the Hospitalist Service area are ultimately responsible for all aspects of medical care and provide or assist residents and/or the mid-level practitioner in the process of evaluation and treatment of the Hospitalist patients. The incumbent evaluates the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status. 2. Assists with oversight of functions related to the administration of Health Professions Education (HPE) funding, accreditation, appointment process, and affiliate relationships in accordance with VHA Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) directives, handbooks, policies, memos, and notices; The Joint Commission Standards; and accreditation standards for multiple health professions. 3. Interacts with affiliated institutions as appropriate on matters pertaining to trainee assignments and curricula and on evaluation of the VA medical facility as a training site. 4. Acts as a consultant to other VA medical facility staff on educational matters and interpreting policies according to VA requirements; provides comprehensive support to residency and training program and site directors. 5. Acts as the liaison with the sponsoring institution's Designated Institution Officer (DIO) and other education leaders in the academic programs of education and research. 6. Advocates for sufficient VA resources for appropriate management of all educational programs. 7. Exercises oversight and administration of all clinical training programs at the VA medical facility and ensure compliance with all pertinent requirements and program accreditation standards. This oversight responsibility includes fiscal matters, affiliation and disbursement agreements, programmatic accreditation, credentials of trainees, appointment, and payment of trainee stipends. 8. The Hospitalist provider is responsible to coordinate with providers within their own and outside of their own Service Line, and with other VHA facilities or community providers as determined by the plan of care for the veteran. Open, clear, and collaborative engagements are a key duty. Incumbent is ultimately responsible to ensure barriers for Veterans and staff are minimized in order to promote a positive work environment. Fosters positive working relationships with staff, peers and Veterans. 9. Staff within Hospitalist setting perform consultations within their own and other service lines as indicated. They are responsible for the provision of clinical care, graduate and undergraduate medical education, and scientific research as appropriate. 10. Although on-call hours are seldom, staff within Hospitalist Service shall be available for emergency interventions when on-call. 11. Staff within the Hospitalist Service are appropriately credentialed and privileged. They participate in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital. They are also involved in continuous quality improvement through peer review process. 12. Ensure that all regulations, policies, and requirements related to time and attendance, travel, procurement are strictly followed. 13. Strive to ensure that mandatory training (including, but not limited to, supervisory courses, sexual harassment, privacy, and security) is completed within the specified timeframe. 14. The position must protect printed & electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 & other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes & policy, & VHA policy; protect the data from unauthorized release or loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion; follow applicable regulations & instructions regarding access to these types of files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement signed by the incumbent. Work Schedule: Variable 8 hr shifts: (7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 8L00 am - 4:30 pm), 12 hr shifts: (days 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, or nights 7:00 pm - 7:00 am)

Requirements

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: The physician selected for this position will be trained and expected to perform duties as the Medical Review Officer (MRO). This position is also expected to supervise and oversee training of Internal Medicine residents, med/peds residents, and medical students in their clinical activities. Administrative oversight of scheduling for all day shift Hospitalist. Preferred Experience: Board Certification is required to be appointed and to perform training duties of this position Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light lifting, under 15 pounds, light carrying under 15 pounds, pulling hand over hand 1.5 hours (varies), pushing, 1 hour (varies), reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking (6 hours- varies), standing (8 hours- varies), repeated bending (4 hours varies), use of hands and fingers, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 12" to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4, hearing (aid permitted).

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
