Medical Record Technician positions will report to the Medical Records Administrative Supervisor of the Health Information Department that is located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center located in Phoenix, AZ. Serves as Medical Records Technician, Health Information Management, performing a full range of well -established clerical and technical work essential to the day-to day operation involving processing and maintaining medical records for compliance with regulatory requirements.
Duties
Retrieves patients' medical records in advance for scheduled appointments and walk-in requests for clinic visits.
Responsible for generating, creating, printing and attaching routing slips to each medical record. Retrieves the medical record(s) needed for the clinic from various hospital stations, offices
Prepares and files appropriate routing slips for all clinics records. Assembles medical records in proper sequence in preparation of clinic appointments and chart review requests.
Reviews all documents returned with the patient's record from the clinic to ascertain filing of the document or scanning of the document; and re-files health record in terminal digit order.
Performs duties related to the receipt, scanning, indexing and transfer of health and administrative information to assure formation is integrated into the Veterans Health Information Systems Technical Architecture (VistA).
Responds to telephone inquiries from professional staff requesting specific information. Obtains patients' medical records from the department and other hospital sources to various requests received from physicians, hospital personnel, administration, Patient Referred Care (PRC) mental health, field clinics, and other IHS facilities.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-05 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-04 in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: reviewing medical records in a clinic or hospital setting insuring files are complete and documents are filed correctly; scanning documents into an electronic health record; & preparing correspondence for fax, mail, or personal pickup.
OR
A completion of four (4) years of education above the high school level OR;
A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-05 grade level.
GS-06 Grade Level:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05 in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: receiving, scanning, indexing, and filing of non-electronic medical and administrative information and forms; ensuring clinical and administrative forms are scanned and integrated into the Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS); & conducting quality audits and verifying the integrity and overall quality of scanned images.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
