About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) is co-located with USMA. USMAPS provides academic, military, and physical instruction in a moral-ethical environment to prepare, motivate, and inspire cadet candidates to qualify for admission to USMA.

Duties

Serve as Director of the Mathematics Department, leading the mathematics program and managing the performance of its faculty. Advise the Dean on academic and general policy matters as they relate to the department. Lead program evaluation, curriculum design and development, and instruction, in alignment with the Dean’s goals. Teach algebra, precalculus, and calculus as required, usually 1-2 sections per term. Provide additional instruction for students requesting or in need of assistance. Set standards for and maintain good order and discipline within the classroom and other school activities. Review and analyze current texts and by adaptation, devise lessons, assignments, and projects. Prepare, administer, and grade formative and summative assessments. Evaluate and provide feedback on work of the student. Ensure the faculty do the same. Engage in ongoing professional development to keep abreast of the varied educational preparedness of the incoming students and ensure the same for the faculty. Serve as a role model, and hold the team accountable for the same, to support the personal and professional development of Cadet Candidates in and out of the classroom. Lead and/or contribute to departmental activities as assigned.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year trial/probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Tour of duty will require some evenings, weekends, and holiday work hours.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: All U.S. Citizens. This is an Excepted Service Appointment. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Instructional Systems Specialist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the work of the position to be filled. The course work must have included study in at least four of the following five areas: (1) Learning theory, psychology of learning, educational psychology: Study of learning theories as they relate to the systematic design, development, and validation of instructional material. (2) Instructional design practices: Study of the principles and techniques used in designing training programs, developing design strategy and models, and applying design methods to the improvement of instructional effectiveness. (3) Educational evaluation: Study of the techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of instructional/educational programs, including developing written and performance tests and survey instruments, and determining reliability and validity of evaluation instruments. (4) Instructional product development: Study of the techniques appropriate for developing training materials, including identifying learner characteristics, specifying objectives, applying training strategy, validating training materials, and evaluating training. (5) Computers in education and training: Study of the application of computers in education and training, including selecting appropriate computer software. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. Designing educational program objectives in alignment with established program goals; 2. Teaching courses in algebra, precalculus and/or calculus; and 3. Engaging in professional development. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. In addition to meeting the basic requirement and specialized experience above, you will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities--KSAs) in the following five areas: 1) Ability to supervise and direct a diverse staff. Ability to build strategic relationships with internal and external partners. Including the ability to listen, lead, negotiate, manage conflict, inspire, collaborate, and coordinate with others as well as manage resources to accomplish a mission. Ability to create and inclusive and collegial learning environment. 2) Ability to lead and develop a diverse faculty, i.e., promoting scholarship, practice, and service within Mathematics education, the academic department, and the institution. 3) Skill in program evaluation, and mathematics curriculum design and development. 4) Ability to teach Mathematics at the post-high school level, developing, mentoring and supporting struggling, post-high school students from diverse backgrounds in the subject, as well as with learning and study skills. 5) Academic accomplishments (Ed.D. or Ph.D. in mathematics education preferred) in mathematics education or mathematics. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
