Duties

Respond to hazardous material/CBRNE incidents, surveying the scene for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release. Drive and Operate firefighting vehicles to and from the scene of fires following predetermined routes or selecting alternate routes when necessary. Respond to alarms and combat fires requiring the full performance of firefighting task involving structures, equipment, facilities, crashed and burning aircrafts, fuel, chemical and brush fires. Perform maintenance to firefighting equipment, perform standby duties, fire station housekeeping, and participate in regular training and exercises. Provide non-professional care as an emergency medical technician.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Must complete the Army Accident-Avoidance Course.

GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06). In addition to meeting the experience requirements above, applicants must also possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT-B Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable: Certification Requirements By Grade: GS- 06 - Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HAZMAT Awareness, and HAZMAT Operations. GS-07 - Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, Airport Firefighter certifications and National Registry EMT-B to qualify for duty 2B. To qualify for duty 2A, must also be certified as Apparatus Driver Operator - Pumper - ARFF - Tanker and Aerial. NOTE: This position may be filled at the GS-06, or at the full-performance grade level, GS-07.
