You will serve as a RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL SPECIALIST in the HEAD NUCLEAR ENGINEER, NUCLEAR ENGINEERING & PLANNING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will be involved in all phases of receipt, inspection, storage, issue, disposal, shipment, transportation, inventory and accountability of all radioactive and special nuclear material. You will maintain records that are required by federal law and NAVSEA 08, for receipt, shipment and disposal of radioactive material. You will prepare and arrange shipments of radioactive waste for the Shipyard and Off-yard activities. You will maintain Radiation Worker qualifications. You will maintain DOT and NAVSUP qualifications/certifications for handling and transportation of radioactive materials.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You may be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card to make official government purchases for goods and services.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You may be required to complete ethics orientation within three months of appointment and submit a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450, within 30 days of appointment.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area Worker certification.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience ensuring all phases of the shipment process for radioactive material are in compliance with applicable federal, state and local requirements; Experience originating and escorting shipments of radioactive or special nuclear materials between storage facilities; Experience ensuring all receipts for radioactive or special nuclear material shipments received are processed through proper data processing systems; Experience packaging, marking, and labeling of radioactive or special nuclear material leaving the Shipyard meets federal, state and local requirements; Experience conducting inventories of radioactive and special nuclear materials. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree
OR
Possession of a LL.M., if related
