You will serve as an ENGINEER/SCIENTIST in the Integrated Engagement Systems Department of NAVSURFWARCENDLD.
You will serve as the Gun Weapon System Mechanical Hardware Lead in the Integrated Engagement Systems Department, Gun Weapon Systems Division, Gun Weapon Systems Mechanical Design Branch (Code E34) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.
Duties
You will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring all technical rigor.
You will be responsible for governing the mechanical technical design and development of weapon system components and mounts.
You will provide engineering oversight of complex technical data packages, ensure technical feasibility in designs, and collaborate internally and externally to achieve overarching technical goals.
You will conduct regular Design Reviews that feed into and support higher level reviews such as Product Review Panels (PRPs) and Product
Certification Panels (PCPs) while staying abreast of best practices.
You will mentor, develop, and coach a team of mechanical engineers to be proficient in engineering best practices including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, modeling and simulation, and materials and manufacturing specifications.
You will lead and coordinate regular design reviews to ensure technical rigor of all mechanical products during the design phase.
You will provide oversight, accountability and signature authority to ensure drawings, designs and other deliverables are adequately reviewed, recommend process improvement initiatives to improve the technical products and rigor.
You will develop and implement process, guidance, and strategic planning to enable NSWCDD's technical capability in weapons design, development and integration on manned and unmanned platforms.
You will lead the development of common interfaces and mounts for weapon systems that are platform agnostic.
You will implement engineering best practices and principles for advocating and leading the design, development, testing, integration, and certification of gun mounts, gimbals and mechanical components for prototypes and integration.
You will lead the exploration, definition, and prototyping of future gun mount and gimbal system integration concepts to enable capability transition in warfighting platforms, to include sensors, high energy and electromagnetic advanced capabilities.
You will lead technical risk management of hardware and prototype design efforts.
You will review products for quality and technical rigor prior to delivery to sponsors and external customers, reporting status and design metrics to various stakeholders as a Command asset.
You will coordinate with technical and programmatic leadership across departments and programs to ensure alignment, minimizing duplication of efforts and ensuring common solutions are provided wherever possible.
You will lead failure investigation boards and process improvement initiatives as required.
You will effectively communicate, verbally, in writing, or by the development of briefings, complex scientific and technical concepts/trades, patents, proposals, product improvements and gain acceptance of potentially controversial recommendations.
You will review task planning and prioritization recommendations for accuracy based on knowledge of work efforts and understanding of mechanical design processes in providing quality products to sponsor, integration test sites, and end users.

Qualifications
This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled by a General Engineer (0801-series), a General Physical Scientist (1301-series), an Operations Research Analyst (1515-series), a Mathematician (1520-series), or a Computer Scientist (1550-series) depending upon the qualifications of the candidate. In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower pay band, ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalency), in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer or scientist leading technical teams in the development or integration of Department of Defense weapon systems or gun weapon systems.
Examples of specialized qualifying experience may include: designing, developing, prototyping, testing and fielding weapon systems. Experience may also include, reviewing and approving complex free body diagrams and hand calculations, reviewing and approving mechanical drawings, mentoring, teaching and interpreting GD&T, conducting and leading design reviews and product review boards, experience in design and integration of gun weapon systems.
This includes fundamental understanding of gun technology and implementation. The incumbent should have experience in designing and analyzing components of the gun weapon system. The incumbent understands the interaction of the components of the gun weapon system, including combat system inputs and ammunition effects. In order to execute this position, the incumbent's trade space must be all inclusive for interfaces and components affecting the overall performance of a gun weapon system. Additionally, the incumbent shall have extensive experience in mechanical design to include, free body diagrams, hand calculations, modeling, interpreting mechanical drawings and GD&T, assembly of mechanical systems, leading and mentoring a team, defining, teaching and enforcing policies and standards.

- Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Degree: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university; OR a degree with curriculum in differential and integral calculus, with additional courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics; OR
- Professional Engineering Series (08XX) - Substitution of Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
