About the Position: Serves as a Shift Supervisor for the Security Guard force. Incumbent will exercise direct supervision over subordinate Security Guards and Lead Security Guards.

Duties

Responsible for performing a diverse range of protective responsibilities over Federal property, employees, and visitors. Plan and coordinate the activities of a guard force shift, to ensure the maintenance of physical security standards; enforcement of federal state, and local laws and official orders and regulations. Ensure the guard force understands their role in protection of government and personal property, access of personnel and vehicles to the installation, supporting the implementation of emergency plans, and patrolling of restricted access areas. Develop training plans based on approved training courses and regulatory requirements and supervise necessary training for guard personnel in the use of weapons, protection against espionage, sabotage, and other organized subversive actions. Perform supervisory and administrative duties relating to the security guard force; plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability.
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing and sign the DA Form 5019 Condition of Employment.
  • Must meet the requirements under the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • Must wear the installation issued uniform and maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • Employee must be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid. May act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
  • Must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.
  • Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license. Loss of license may result in removal from the position.
  • Must maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT). Failure to meet the standards after the second attempt within a ninety-day period will result in separation.
  • Employees are expected to maintain a high standard of conduct; and when being considered for employment and periodically thereafter, they must be assessed under the Individual Reliability Program (IRP).
  • Must successfully complete Security Guard Training.
  • May be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • Shift work is required; hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Overtime may be required as directed and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
  • Must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • Must perform as a member of the installation's overall security response capability.
  • Must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.

Qualifications

Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to Veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes: assigning work, to include management of multiple shifts; controlling access, or patrolling restricted and limited access areas; providing on-the-job training to broaden security guard skills; AND leading or supervising subordinates. Experience can include work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. This experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level (GS-07).
