This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administrator (DEA), Office of Forensic Sciences Office of Forensic Sciences, New England Laboratory (SFL10) Group 1. This position(s) primary purpose is to conduct visual, chemical, photographic, and other scientific examinations, using instrumentation as needed, of complex submissions of physical evidence to form an opinion regarding identification of latent prints and/or impressions.

As a your typical work assignments may include: Conducting visual, chemical, photographic, and other scientific examinations. Responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing forensic activities. Performing duties in support of the laboratory system quality assurance program. Training DEA agents, other governmental personnel, and local police in the processing, collection, preservation, and packaging of evidence.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirements AND Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered. Qualification claims will be subject to verification. BASIC requirements for this position: Requires a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent GS130112/13. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience for this position includes: GS-12- One (1) year equivalent to the GS-11 Federal grade level, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-11 if outside the Federal service performing the following duties; 1) Processing evidence and capturing friction ridge prints using established methods; 2) conducting forensic friction ridge examinations using ACE (analysis, comparison, and evaluation), documenting actions, and providing written results; and 3) using automated databases for encoding and searching friction ridge prints for identification purposes. GS-13- One (1) year equivalent to the GS-12 Federal grade level, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-12 if outside the Federal service performing the following duties; 1) Processing evidence and capturing friction ridge prints using established methods; 2) conducting forensic friction ridge examinations using ACE (analysis, comparison, and evaluation), documenting actions, and providing written results; 3) using automated databases for encoding and searching friction ridge prints for identification purposes; and 4) the applicant must have and maintain certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Certified Latent Print Examiner. Note: Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives will only be considered and approved under conditions specified provided the agency has determined that the position is likely to be difficult to fill in the absence of an incentive and funding for such an incentive is available.
