Duties

Performs journeyman level maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems independently or as a crew leader. Performs and participates in a variety of diagnostic inspections. Inspects, adjusts, lubricates, tests, installs, calibrates, and/or performs major and minor repairs at regularly scheduled intervals. Performs installation of new equipment, maintenance, repair, overhaul or replacement of parts, systems, equipment, etc., normally associated with the lock and dam facility. Inspects, troubleshoots, and/or rebuilds electric motors, diesel and gasoline engines of associated equipment at the facility. Understands hydraulic systems using up to 1650 PSI repairing leaks, overhauling pumps, repacking cylinders, testing and adjusting components in accordance with written specifications. Utilize experience, technical manuals and other resources to design and fabricate machinery parts. Disassemble and replace defective hydraulic components such as actuators, valves and fittings up to 1650 PSI. Performs maintenance tests and inspections of equipment at regularly scheduled intervals. Utilizes electrical schematics and traces complex circuits to diagnose malfunctions and extent of required repairs. Works from drawings, wiring diagrams and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to repair and adjust equipment. Utilize gauges and other measuring devices to determine adjustments for flood control structures. Troubleshoot four way directional valves, flow control, counter balance valves and related hydraulic control equipment. Troubleshoot flood control instrumentation. Work in cramped spaces and work with both large and small items to insure all equipment is de-energized or made stable. Record electrical measurements utilized Fluke and Ohm meters to analyze electrical issues.

  • This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • This is an Emergency Essential Status position. If designated as Mission Essential, incumbents are not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies created by inclement weather conditions or other emergency situations as appropriate.
  • Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform/a valid state driver's license/protective clothing and/or equipment is provided.

Routinely lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders and poles. Machinery on high lift structures is large and requires the skills of a heavy construction mechanic to effect repair or replacement. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed indoors and outdoors during the day or night subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical equipment, on scaffolds and from slings or floating plant. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury, or discomfort and when inside, exposure to moving machinery, electrical circuits and loud noises, and at times, dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing.
