Duties

As the Geologist in this position, you will: Geologist, GS-1350-07/09/11 The Burns District Geologist Position allows for experience in the following opportunities: Serves as the Burns District's lead and subject matter expert for mineral materials, mineral leasing, geothermal, abandoned mine lands (AML), and geology. The incumbent works on both field offices and the district. The District minerals program includes sales and administration of an existing open pit diatomite mine, many mineral material sites used by the public, county, and state, and "recreational mineral" collecting including obsidian, petrified wood, thunder eggs, sunstones and other minerals of public interest. The geologist is a sole resource, and as a result serves on many project interdisciplinary teams. The geologist is also the NEPA lead for minerals, mining, AML, and geothermal projects on the district. The geologist uses paper and automated resource mapping, analysis, and management tools, and for planning and field work including GIS, GPS, Lidar mineral and geologic maps. Coordinates with County, State, and Federal agencies to coordinate mineral material supplies for road construction and maintenance. The geologist assists the US Forest Service in administration of their minerals programs.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. You must meet the BASIC Requirement *AND* the ADDITIONAL Requirement in order to qualify for this position. BASIC Requirement for the 1350 series: A. Degree: Successfully completed a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts. OR B: A combination of education and experience, that includes course work as shown in A above [20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.] PLUS, appropriate experience or additional education related to this position. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in one of the fields stated in A above. This combination must be sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of a professional Geologist. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts. *AND* ADDITIONAL Requirement: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: GS-07: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience, comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) reviewing and determining compliance with regulations for exploration, development, and production activities for salable and locatable minerals; (2) reviewing and analyzing geologic data for locatable and salable minerals; (3) preparing technical reports on geological information or data; (4) preparing reparations of geologic permits, reports, maps, or presentations; and (5) reviewing mining plans of operation and/or amendments for locatable minerals. OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR Superior Academic Achievement: In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. GS-09: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience, comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) assisting with geological investigations to include data analyses, monitoring, scheduling, or project funding preparation; (2) applying standard geologic or geochemical techniques to acquire data and samples; (3) interpreting geological and geophysical data in order to evaluate geologic-related projects; (4) communicating technical information to others by developing print publications or giving oral presentations. OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR Combination: Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.
