Duties
Performs as functional leader in various aviation, ground support, and logistical activities related to airtanker and retardant base operations and all other fixed wing operations that may be used at designated base.
Creates, reviews, amends, and implements, as necessary, safety practices and emergency plans, trains personnel in safety and emergency procedures for airtanker base operations and ensures use of Personal Protection Equipment.
Incumbent compiles and shares data, using Microsoft Office and other software programs or databases, for daily summaries such as retardant use for the day, aircraft in/out for the day and reports.
Performs administrative work, such as documentation, which includes the daily activity log, data entry and querying reports, answering phones, and utilizing base radios.

Qualifications

At the GS-06 Level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience performing RAMP duties for wildland fire aircraft, talking to aircraft over the radio or through radio headsets, receiving information from dispatch and delivering requests for aircraft; consolidating and inputting data using computer programs; and recording and maintaining retardant and aircraft logs; OR 1 full year of graduate education which is directly related to work of the position; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: This position involves frequent movement and interactions requiring muscular coordination, good vision, good hearing, reaction reflexes, and mental alertness. Physical effort is expended in performing certain aspects of this position.
Work Environment: Majority of activities are performed in an airbase environment, both indoors and outdoors. Extreme variations in temperature and climatic conditions are common. Work requires use of safety equipment including hearing and eye protection and high visibility clothing. Exposure to chemical irritants are possible. The work involves exposure to operating aircraft that result in high noise levels and exposure to turning propellers, prop wash, jet intake areas and jet blast, and flying dust and debris. Concurrent movement of multiple mixed aircraft types and service vehicles in the ramp area creates potential for serious accident, injury, or property damage. Fatigue and mental stress could be present due to extensive work periods and emergency nature of work.

This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
