About the Position: This vacancy is for a General Maintenance Supervisor, WS-4701-16, located at the Illinois Waterway Project Office, Maintenance Section, in Peoria, IL.

Duties

Plan and schedule work assignments within schedules and priorities established by higher level supervision Determine availability of manpower and equipment, deadlines and other work projects for which responsible Assign and explain work requirements to subordinate levels of supervision; direct rearrangement of space and development of specialized tools and equipment Analyze work schedules, determine manpower, tooling, material requirements, and methods to be used; and plan work assignments considering trades or other occupations involved Recommend promotion or reassignment of subordinate supervisor, make formal appraisals of their work performance, and determine training needs for all levels of subordinate supervisors and workers Promote and administer a variety of management programs for the units supervised, such as safety, cost reduction, etc., and serve as the management representative established by higher authority Organize, coordinate, and direct the work activities and personnel of the units supervised

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
  • Subsequent/Annual physicals are required for this position.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) General Maintenance Supervisor without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to perform common tasks while working as a member of a team that provides maintenance support services including but not limited to equipment maintenance, machining, welding, carpentry, sandblasting, painting, electrical, communications support and facilities maintenance, lock and dam repair, heavy crane operations, towing, channel maintenance, and miter gate repair. I can provide some leadership experience involving repair and maintenance or construction activities and can lead groups of workers to accomplish tasks on time. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Working Conditions: Work crews are routinely assigned to remote locations not only within the Illinois Waterway Project, but also sister projects which are located at the Farmdale and Fondulac Reservoirs located in East Peoria, IL, and Chicago District. Work assignments are typically on an ongoing basis and are accomplished within several weeks to months. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory. Incumbent will be exposed to all weather conditions, unpleasant heat, fumes, and possible injuries.
