This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Police Service (PS) with the Carl Vinson VA Medical Health Care System. The mission of the Police Officer is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. Safety and security are paramount to ensuring that the VA successfully serve and honor the men and women who are America's Veterans.

Duties

The PS ensures that all stakeholders safely enter any VA facility across the country with the confidence that they receive a consistently high level of protection and customer service without bias from VA Police Officers. This is accomplished through crime prevention activities, typical law enforcement actions, emergency response capabilities, special training and tactics, weapons, and equipment and systems utilization. The Police Officer uses a Veteran Centered Policing (VCP), VA-specific law enforcement model in which the VA police force serves and protects Veterans, employees, and all others who access VA care and services. Duties assigned not limited to: The incumbent serves as a Police Officer ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations and properties within various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments, such as VHA Medical Centers and facilities, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, and domiciliaries throughout the United States. The incumbent is expected to empathize, engage, and communicate with all individuals they encounter to ensure a positive outcome and the safety of the facility and all its occupants. Serves as a Police Officer carrying out responsibilities where most work is performed on Veterans Affairs Departmental properties, which includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed to VA. Protects Veterans, volunteers, and others on Departmental property, U.S. officials, other individuals, and him or herself during any given situation against threats to personal safety when force becomes necessary to enforce laws and regulations. Detects and intervenes in criminal activity; responds to calls for police assistance, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances. Provides patrol in vehicles, on foot, and/or on a bicycle. Performs drug and contraband intervention techniques and provides training to those areas where contraband identification and knowledge is imperative for the staff. Serves as an interregnal part of the suicide prevention program and is often the first person seen by Veterans. Initiates investigative contacts/stops, exercises search and arrest authority, detains witnesses, and apprehends suspects. Executes arrest warrants issued by federal and local courts. Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:00pm, 4:00pm-12:00am, 12:00am-8:00am; Rotating shifts, weekends and holidays included. Position Description Title/PD#: Police Officer (Senior)/PD99926-S and PD99926S Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Authorized Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Expert level knowledge of all facets of logistics and acquisition management including requirements determination, acquisition, materiel management, performance measurement, quality management and continuous process improvement, inventory and warehouse management, transportation; Mastery of contracting methods and contract types for development of acquisition strategy in order to plan and carry out long-term pre-award and post-award acquisitions. Knowledge and skill sufficient to manage facility acquisition program involving coordination of, and planning for a number of contracts; Knowledge and skill sufficient to manage multiple VISN commodity standardization initiatives; a thorough knowledge of the program objectives, scheduling, and interrelationships with other programs; and skill in interpreting policies to solve unprecedented and unpredictable problems. There is no educational substitution for the GS-07 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
