About the Position: This position is assigned to the Maintenance Section to perform crane and engineering equipment operating duties in connection with the operation, maintenance, and repair of earthen dams, pumping plants, drainage structures, flood control dams, levees, channels, weirs, recreation facilities, etc. ***NOTE: Management may make a selection at WG-11 or WG-12 grade level.

Duties

Operate crawler-type power cranes equipped with various attachments, primarily rock bucket and dirt bucket, to perform, on ground or aboard river barges. Operate hydraulic telescoping boom 55-ton crane; a diesel powered mobile crane with 30 ton capacity and boom length of 72 feet; crawler cranes; backhoe; excavators; end loaders; bull dozers; motor grader; tractor and lowboy trailer; dump trucks, etc. Responsible for pile driving or moving earth and other material in connection with construction and maintenance of levees, bank stabilization, foundation development, and other earth construction operations. Perform or direct the performance of oiling, greasing, and refueling of equipment and affixing of the proper attachments. Serve as an operator of a 60 ton truck tractor and serve as an incidental motor vehicle operator.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter.
  • This position has a requirement to lift 50 pound in the regular performance of duties.
  • Must possess or able to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement. (Note: A copy of your valid Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License must be submitted with this application.)
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Crane Operator License. (Note: A copy of your valid Crane Operator License must be submitted with this application.)
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 75% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position is designated as Mission Essential. May be required to work overtime and other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Call back and emergency duty are regular requirements of this position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work in inclement weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-11: Ability to do the work of a(n) Crane Operator without more than normal supervision, which includes operating a lattice boom friction crane and mobile hydraulic crane to pick up, position, and/or lower objects. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-12: Ability to do the work of a(n) Crane Operator without more than normal supervision, which includes operating a lattice boom friction crane and mobile hydraulic crane to pick up, position, and/or lower objects; rigging objects to be lifted by a crane using rope slings, wire straps, hooks, or chain slings; operating a crawler type friction cranes to perform work such as digging, grading, excavating, pile driving or moving earth and other material; and performing preventative maintenance on lattice boom cranes. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Work requires heavy effort in pushing, pulling, and depressing various levers, clutches, and brakes. Incumbent is subject to strain caused by vibrations of the crane and from the jerking and jolting motions while lifting and moving loads. Work occasionally requires moving objects by hand (up to 50 pounds) such as lifting hooks and cables, changing rigging, setting outriggers, etc. Working Conditions: Works outside, mostly in cab which houses equipment controls. Tracked and rubber tire cranes are operated on land along riverbanks, in close proximity of facilities, and near power lines in hazardous and difficult terrain and where moving space is restricted. There is danger of overturning other equipment if heavy lifts are not made properly. Work is performed where it is frequently noisy, dirty, and where there are fumes from the motor and moving machinery. While driving vehicles, the incumbent could be exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, broken bones and strained back as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles, and while performing maintenance duties. Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures, as outlined in the USACE 385-1-1, Safety and Health Requirements Manual. Appropriate clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazards and its use is mandatory.
