Serves as the Family Representative for the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The purpose of this position is to coordinate all administrative aspects & requirements for funeral arrangements & burial applications for deaths occurring at Little Rock and North Little Rock campuses. Burial benefits guidance is also provided to family members of patients who die while at CAVHS Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

Duties

Handles all administrative details of patient death including determining eligibility and counseling families on death benefits, preparation of necessary paperwork, release of monies, valuables, and personal effects. Obtains family consent for medical procedures such as autopsies, surgical procedures. etc. Prepare letters to close out estates of deceased patients. Works with Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency. The incumbent exercises discretion and careful judgement in reporting death cases to the coroner. Conducts contract burial inspections at funeral homes per VA guidelines, ensuring the casket is made of the proper material and that the remains have been appropriately clothes and arranged prior to burial. Requisitions, issues and maintains control of flags to be used for burial purposes. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 08:00am - 4:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the agency. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/24/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized experience must be 1 year at the GS-5 level. Specialized Experience: Displays excellent customer service communicating with a diverse population to discuss death of family members and burial benefits. Works independently without close supervision. Experience in computer skills and the ability to use many electronic databases for complex disposition of burial/death paperwork. Experience in preparing written documents such as correspondence, memorandum, reports, pamphlets and etcetera of a routine nature. Experienced in using computer systems and Microsoft Office products such as word, excel, PDF, etc. Experience must be detailed in your resume. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Computer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Technical Competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary but requires some bending, walking, standing, and carrying such items as patient records, supplies and personal effects. Employee must posses a gracious, compassionate and pleasant attitude and be composed at all times when assisting families during an extreme emotional period for them.
