The U.S. Parole Commission promotes public safety and strives for justice and fairness in the exercise of its authority to release and supervise offenders under its jurisdiction. The Office of Case Operations is responsible for the conduct and supervision of all parole activities affecting Federal and D.C. prisoners in federal or state institutions and executes all parole revocation and termination actions.

The primary purpose of this position is to preside as a quasi-judicial officer, hearing cases arising from Federal and District of Columbia statutes.
Evaluates prisoners for parole release, continued incarceration, or revocation.
Prepares pre-hearing and post-hearing summaries based on personal interviews with prisoners, victims, and other witnesses.
Reviews official court files and other legal documents.
Makes final decisions, or makes recommendations to final decision makers, for or against parole or revocation.
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
- You may be required to complete a one-year probationary or two-year trial period.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on or after 12/31/1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.
- You must meet all eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement and continue to meet these requirements throughout the hiring process. Offers can be rescinded if requirements are not met.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Requires temporary duty (TDY) travel up to 20% of the time.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Hearing Examiner at (GS-0930-13/14), you must possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you're applying to.
If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF-50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).
For the GS-13:
Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Preparing summaries or reports of pertinent facts for probation or parole actions, prisoner disciplinary hearings, or other criminal justice related proceedings; Participating in administrative hearings or court proceedings related to the detention of prisoners where evidential standards are applied; AND Analyzing information or evidence gathered from multiple sources to assist with making final determination recommendations or advocating for a desired case disposition.
Time-in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
For the GS-14:
Specialized Experience: For the GS-14, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: Examining evidence presented at hearings to make legal and factually accurate findings or recommendations; Applying laws or guidelines governing probation or parole to make case decision recommendations for final decision makers; AND Presiding over administrative hearings related to the detention of prisoners where evidential standards are applied.
Time-in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
