You will serve as a Painter (Training Leader) in the Production Trades Division and Industrial Execution Department at the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest in North Base Coronado, San Diego, CA.

Duties

You will provide on-the-job and classroom methods of instruction to trainees, apprentices, workers and journeyman in the proper use of tools, machinery and repair procedures associated with the painter trade. You will demonstrate proper trade techniques and practices, explaining safety precautions to be followed in setting up machinery and equipment. You will give instruction in the use of layout techniques, power tools, materials, measuring devices, precision instruments, and safety devices. You will work closely with Fleet Support Team Engineers and/or Materials Lab Engineers to help set up new processes, bring in new equipment and/or materials used in the aircraft painting field. You will encourage good class attendance and conduct. You will motivate workers to achieve training objectives. You will accomplish other duties as assigned.

  • This position is subject to work rotating shifts and overtime, as necessary.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain required level(s) of certification and/or training.
  • This position requires heavy lifting over 40 pounds and carrying of objects up to 40 pounds. Also, this position is subject to working at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Tasks for this position will be performed standing, sitting at a bench, and bending. At times pulling, pushing, and reaching are required with intermittent bending.
  • This position is subject to various noise levels, which occasionally exceed 85 DBA.
  • Hearing protection must be worn for noise levels of 85 DBA and double protected is needed for levels over 96 DBA.
  • This position requires corrected vision as eye strain may occur from prolonged work on small parts, near vision correctable at Jaeger 2 at 14” binocular, far vision correctable in one eye 20/20 or better.
  • You will be subject to participate in a medical surveillance program for noise, sight, lead, isocyanates, chrome, respirator, cadmium, and chromium IV.
  • This position may have exposure to cuts, electrical shock, strains, broken bones, and contact with industrial materials such as cleaning chemicals, solvents, oils, and greases.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • You will be required to comply with health, safety and environmental instructions, and policies as well as all agency policies and procedures.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE, and includesthe following: Ability to perform common tasks under general supervision including: Conduct formal and informal training as well as on-the-job training for trainees, apprentices and other journeymen on the fully range of painting trade theories; Examine, evaluate, prepare and apply protective and decorative coatings and paint finishes to aircraft components, engine components, ground support equipment and other major components; Working with coating materials (i.e.; lacquers, enamels, sealers, urethanes, waterborne, epoxies, elastomeric, ceramic coating); Mixing materials to obtain the proper color and/or viscosity; Sanding and feathering existing coatings and selecting the appropriate grit abrasives; Read and understand specifications, sketches, blueprints, technical directives, manuals and shop orders, to obtain information on surfaces to be coated; Maintain and repair spray painting equipment.
