About the Position: The incumbent performs a variety of duties involved with the installation, trouble shooting, repair, relocating, overhaul and modification of various special-purpose Heating Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) units and systems.
Duties
Installs, repairs and maintains Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems which frequently must be modified to meet specific and critical conditions in laboratories and other experimental and test activities.
Dismantles, repairs and reassembles units such as compressors, pumps, valves, fans and bearings.
Operates, adjusts and repairs HVAC and refrigeration systems which are controlled by computer-based systems.
Installs, repairs, and maintains large, complex, high- and low-pressure heat exchangers having a great variety of complicated components, parts, and auxiliary equipment.
Traces and locates equipment failures, determines the repairs needed, and repairs or replaces auxiliary components such as motors, bearings, alarms, safety devices, boosters, and generators.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires incumbent to hold an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Technician Certification prior to employment.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes repairing a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration or air conditioning units and systems and performing work from oral instruction and work orders. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort
Moderate to strong physical effort required due to the size of the equipment involved. Mechanic frequently lifts, carries, sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally heavier weights. Often makes repairs for ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and hard-to-reach places requiring bending, kneeling and stooping.
Work Conditions
Occasionally required to work outside in all kinds of weather. There is frequently exposure to dirt, dust, grease, noise, odor, smoke, possibility of toxic fumes. Protective clothing or devices, including uncomfortable respirators or masks are occasionally required.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
