Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period non-to-exceed 1 year with possible extension up 4 years without re-announcement.

Duties

Incumbent plans and organizes activities to accomplish projects, orders supplies, materials, and equipment, explains work requirements, and answers technical questions. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment within the district’s recreation sites, buildings, trails, and for promoting safe work ethics among staff and volunteers. Also helps with the organization, management, and safety of several annual BLM co-sponsored volunteer events including clean-ups, trail celebration days, and other special events. Installs signs as needed The employee will independently carry our the duties of the position.

Requirements

  • May require a one year probationary period.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. GS-6 Park Ranger: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; developing and conducting guided tour programs; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; monitoring special recreation permits; conducting potable water tests in compliance with appropriate state laws; or assisting with supervision of seasonal recreation technicians. OR Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation (i.e. related course work). OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience. Related Course Work -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science related to the protection of public lands, social sciences, museum sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly relates to the duties performed by a Park Ranger. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work may be performed indoors or outdoors. When outdoor weather conditions van vary greatly. Work may occur in steep, wet and muddy terrain, in campgrounds, recreation sites, visitor centers, offices, fee booths, bathrooms, trails or remote areas requiring extended camping. Positions may require physical exertions such as extended walking/standing, driving, stooping/crouching, digging, or lifting/carrying. Individuals should be able to work alone or with people; during day/night/weekend/holiday hours.

Education

If qualifying based on education, you will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6 and 7.
