This position serves as a Journeyman Pipefitter - Boiler Operator within the Facilities Management Maintenance & Operations section of the St Cloud VA Medical Center located in St Cloud, MN. The primary duties of this position include installing components, conducting modifications, performing maintenance and completing necessary repairs on all high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems; hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam-generating.
Duties
Installing components, conducting modifications, performing maintenance and completing necessary repairs on all high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems; systems include operation of hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam-generating systems.
Installing and repairing steam generators, vacuum, air, water, and condensate pumps, radiators, automatic and manual valves and flash and expansion tanks.
Working with piping systems including water, natural gas, high/medium/low pressure steam and condensate; as well as medical gases, compressed air, heating and cooling, sewer, irrigation, and deionized water.
Installing, testing and maintaining the Fire Protection Systems (wet and dry) in accordance with applicable codes and regulations; establishes system routes, places and cuts route openings.
Placing regulating devices, and hangers for proper pitch and elevation; determining proper operation of the systems and the layout by identifying risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators needed to support the pressure of the systems.
Reading and interpreting blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturers' literature and specifications for sizing, estimating, installing, and repairing new or existing piping systems.
Replacing and pairing sections of pipe, steam traps and relief and control valves.
Cutting, threading, and connecting pipes by means of union, flanges, and sweating.
Fitting pipe sections by screwing, bolting, brazing, welding, gluing, fusing and soldering.
Testing systems and equipment for proper operation, circulation, flow, pressure, and to ensure leak-free joints.
Tracing and troubleshooting pipe lines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots.
Performing safety and preventive maintenance inspections of all associated systems and equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Pipe fitting and repair of utility steam system and condensate return systems. Boiler Plant Operator experience. Must be familiar with steam systems and pressure control for it as well as condensate return systems.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work is accomplished throughout the Medical Center Campus, both inside and outdoors considering weather extremes and conditions. Incumbent must be able to reach all places as necessary to view and inspect all equipment and component parts. Duties require standing, stooping, bending, walking, kneeling, crawling, and unusual and cramped positions on a continual basis. Work is performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Occasionally may lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Is subject to high temperature when working on steam lines. Occasionally performs work outside in inclement weather when making emergency repairs. Frequently exposed to possibility of strains, bruises, burns, and infections. Incumbent is expected to properly use PPE for the assigned task(s) within assigned working conditions.
