This position is located in Canyonlands National Park, in the Division of Resource Management, also assisting the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection.
The Maze, Hans Flat Ranger Station is a remote duty station located 46 miles (1.5 hours) from the nearest paved road and a two-hour drive from the nearest town with basic services (Green River or Hanksville, Utah). High-clearance AWD/4WD is recommended.
Duties
This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to a split non-pay up to 5 pay periods each year. The summer non-pay is 1 pay period (2 weeks) scheduled between mid-July to the end of July and 4 pay periods (8 weeks) scheduled mid-December to mid-January. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.
Major Duties:
The position serves as the Biological Science Technician for the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. The work involves extensive remote backcountry travel, at times camping for up to 8 days straight. Duties will include a range of activities including collecting data regarding (1) wildlife species and populations, including non-native invasive animals such as burros, (2) vegetation, including seed collection and invasive plant removal (3) water resources, particularly springs, and (4) other resource stewardship work as needed and (5) visitor services and backcountry conditions.
Monitors and assists in managing non-native wildlife including invasive burros and feral cattle. Assists in conducting wildlife surveys and assembling basic information on wildlife species and populations such as habitat use, sex, age structure, and seasonal movement. Collects data on habitat condition and makes preliminary evaluations of the cause of any problems noted (e.g., drought, disease).
Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines regarding issues such as seasonal closures of recreational use to protect sensitive species by collecting and compiling specified data. Uses standard data summary and analysis to apply findings in assisting with the preparation of reports on field activities. Uses GPS for data collection and retrieves data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or other information management systems. Prepares graphs, charts and illustrations for reports and technical publications.
Conducts backcountry patrols and visitor contacts in a manner that provides for protection of park resources and assures compliance with the Canyonlands backcountry permit system. Provides support for the Maze District visitor services operation, including issuing backcountry permits, answering visitor inquiries via phone and in-person contacts, assisting with operation of a cooperating association bookstore, and serving as a front-line representative for the agency at the Hans Flat Ranger Station.
Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Area Information:
Canyonlands National Park preserves a wilderness of rock at the heart of the Colorado Plateau. Water and gravity have been the prime architects of this land, cutting flat layers of sedimentary rock into hundreds of canyons, mesas, buttes, fins, arches and spires.
On-site Park housing is available.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/22/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: implementing established natural resource management projects; following instructions and standardized procedures; collecting and organizing field data; ensuring quality control of data collected; performing routine and recurring testing of collected samples; recording data collected and providing preliminary assessment and classification of the information; assisting in the preparation of resource management reports, plans, and guidelines. Duties are supportive of professional specialists in resource management; relevant to research, conservation, and management of natural resources such but not limited to wildlife (land or aquatic) monitoring or control; field studies on plant or forest ecology, inventorying, monitoring, and/or control of invasive plants, or making other field observations on the state of natural resource conditions. Habitat restoration, invasive plant monitoring and/or working with seasonal staff. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 1 full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hour or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position. Examples of directly related education are biology, botany, range science, forestry, ecology, environment science, zoology, fisheries, animal husbandry, natural resource management or other directly related fields. You must include a copy of your transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
