This position is located in Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard Pacific Area, Coast Guard's icebreakers in Seattle, Washington.
Duties
The incumbent plans research cruises on Coast Guard icebreakers, liaisons with embarked scientific parties and the research community at large and provides technical assistance to the ship's crew concerning management of the research facilities on board.
Requirements
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- This position requires a Secret Security Clearance.
- A one-year probationary period may be required.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the Basic Requirements,
To Qualify for the GS-13 Grade Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
Ability to conduct polar and ocean research.
Ability to identify science support missions for icebreakers, or other cutters of opportunity.
Coordinating scientific work of shipboard research operations.
Coordinating training programs supporting oceanographic deck operations.
Conducting research on oceanographic survey vessels, Icebreakers and Artic aircraft.
Ability to communicate complex information both verbally and in writing, to audiences that include senior command, regulators, and members of the public.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
