NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physical Scientist to join our team! This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

Duties

The mission of the Applied Physics Division is to advance measurement science and technology in areas of critical importance to national priority needs, such as, advanced manufacturing, national security, quantum communications, strategic computing, and quantitative imaging! As a new Physical Scientist on our team, you will research and develop novel metrology for film-level and device-level measurement of Heisenberg exchange and thermal transport on industry-relevant materials as part of a CHIPS project and collaborate and communicate with external partners, as appropriate. Key responsibilities include: Execution of magnetic measurements on a range of films of increasing magnetic and optical complexity, and development of data analysis methods to extract the magnetic moment and Heisenberg exchange of relevant layers with appropriate uncertainty analysis. Fabrication of thin film materials and design of nanofabrication of test samples for studies of highspeed magnetic responses. Work closely with collaborators to correlate film-level measurements with device performance, and aid in the development of models that capture the impact of magnetic exchange on device performance. Present research results and submit for publication. Mentor students and post-doctoral researchers towards measurement and system deliverable goals.
