Job opening: Industrial Equipment Mechanic

Salary: $31 - 36 per hour
Employment Type: Full-time
Serves as the Industrial Equipment Mechanic performing preventive maintenance and repair of hydroelectric powerhouse equipment at the Falcon Dam Power Plant, Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Division, Operations Department, United States Section, International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC), to maintain flood control and to conserve water.

Duties

Performs maintenance and repairs hydroelectric powerhouse equipment such as turbines, generators, motors, pumps, pressure regulators, intakes gates, and related mechanical controls. Performs a variety of types of welding (oxygen-acetylene, shielded metal-arc, TIG, MIG), cutting (oxygen-acetylene, carbon arc), brazing, wire feed, and soldering operations. Uses mechanics tools, testing equipment and measuring devices. Operates hand and power tools, jackhammers, pavement breakers, chipping hammers, vibrators and grinders. Checks potable, raw water, and sewage systems. Inspecting potable and raw water systems and sewage system and flushes lines, changes filters, and check for leaks and broken pipe hangars. Operates a pickup truck, forklift, and truck-mounted bucket lift.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Naturalized U.S. Citizen.
  • You must be a current USIBWC employee with competitive or non-competitive appointment eligibility.
  • You must obtain and maintain a favorable background investigation.
  • You may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • You must possess and maintain a valid U.S. Motor Vehicle Drive License without impeding restrictions, issued by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • You must successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination.
  • You must pass a pre-employment drug test and pass periodic drug testing thereafter. A positive result will prevent employment or subject you to disciplinary action, up to removal from the position.
  • You must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 44 pounds unassisted, and over 45 pounds with assistance.
  • You must be able to sustain periods of substantial walking, bending, stooping, standing, crouching, stretching, and reaching.
  • You may be subject to unfavorable conditions that include high and low temperature extremes, and excessive winds.
  • You may be exposed to loud noise, vibration, dirt, gaseous fumes, cleaning solvents, oil, grease, and machines with dangerous moving parts.
  • You must be able to work on high structures up to 75 feet and in confined spaces.
  • You may be required to use a face-fitted respirator.
  • You may be required to work overtime.

Qualifications

Qualifications must be met by 04/19/2024 Minimum Qualification Requirement - To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Industrial Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: diagnosing, repairing, adjusting, maintaining, and lubricating bearings, gears, engines, compressors, and hydraulic equipment; operating machining tools and equipment under normal supervision and practical experience in welding or pipefitting. Performing repair and maintenance of the Power Plant generators, switch and transformer yards, penstocks, turbines, auxiliary equipment, facilities, and grounds; assisting with electrical repairs, and installing and troubleshooting electrical and electronic equipment; troubleshooting industrial plant machinery to determine the nature and extent of repairs necessary; making needed repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components; disassembling and repairing general industrial plant machinery; interpreting and apply technical manuals, shop directives, blue prints, and other documents; operating a pickup truck, forklift, and truck-mounted bucket lift, and inspecting potable and raw water systems and sewage system and flushes lines, changes filters, and check for leaks and broken pipe hangars. Physical Effort: The work requires lifting heavy parts and equipment and works in cramped quarters in tiring positions. Physical effort requires climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and twisting objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. A high degree of concentrated mental and visual attention is necessary to determine cause of trouble and to plan and carry out corrective action; to interpret complex drawings; and to coordinate a high degree of manual dexterity with close visual attention for sustained periods. Working Conditions: Work is performed in the project powerhouse, other structures, and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, extremes of heat or cold, dirt, oils, greases, dust, energized equipment, moving machinery, odors and fumes. Works around and over water, in damp drafty areas, and at various heights. May work with a variety of toxic or caustic materials. Required to work in concrete structures. There is a possibility of cuts, burns, falls, and electrical shock. Must wear all appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
